The Domesday Book of William the Conqueror names and gives owners of places now within the borders of Castleford, Ligulf and Witewood (Whitwood), Lewin at Hoctun (Glasshoughton), Gamel and Gerbodo at Queldale (Wheldale), and Fristune (Fryston).
